Growing up in
the 70’s wasn’t easy. The sexual revolution was in full swing (pun intended),
and self-actualization was the new buzz word. For Emily, it was especially
tough. Her father has figured out that he is attracted to men, but wants to stay
with his wife, so he gets her to agree to an open marriage. Once that door is
open, both parents get so busy fulfilling themselves, they forget they have any
responsibility to their children, leaving young Emily to adjust to a new
neighborhood, school, adolescence and taking care of her younger brother.
VERANO PLACE tackles Emily’s life with humor and
compassion. It is heartfelt, moving and thoroughly engaging. The cast is
terrific, especially Chet Siegel as Emily. Watching her try to
navigate the perils of growing up without any responsible adults around is
disturbing and inspiring.
