John Patrick Shanley’s THE PUSHOVER exhibits the power of love, the diversity of women, and the adaptability to survive. Mostly these aspects clash in this thought-provoking play, but the bond between the three women is undeniable. Be that good or bad. Pearl (Di Zhu) is resiliently attempting to resuscitate a failing restaurant. She brings together Evelyn (Rebecca De Mornay), a tough lady running a spa in New Mexico, and Soochi (Christina Toth), a frazzled woman who may or may not be looking for help. Christopher Sutton rounds out the cast as the lone male. As the women fight to protect themselves, find love, and at times simply survive, the question arises about how they pursue their chosen paths.
This is a tense production directed by Kirk Gostkowski at a non-faltering pace. The cast rises to the occasion. What a delight to see De Mornay in action. THE PUSHOVER will stay with you long after you leave the theater; it may even make you rethink your definition of the word.
