Subtitled “an Irish love story”,
this two-character play pits an isolated Irish “spinster” fisherman against a
citified Welsh girl who works for a publisher in Liverpool. He saw her at a
local wedding, and has never forgotten her. Summoning all his courage, Colm
writes her a letter, tossing out a lure, as it were. He is more than delighted
when she writes back, and thus the 1966 version of an online relationship
begins.
Step two, an actual meeting, is made possible by the marriage of
her cousin on the fisherman’s island. He encourages her to attend, and she does.
Now the personal sparks begin to fly, over glasses of whiskey, of course.
Ultimately Timothea entices him to visit Liverpool, although he isn’t much for
city life.
Let’s just say that things progress even further, as such
things do. Then the first stumbling block. Timothea makes a secret move that
will force Colm to remain in Liverpool, if he can accept what she’s done. He
goes along with the plan for a while, actually a bit delighted with the
prospect. But in the end the conflict of love of a person versus love of his old
lifestyle brings things to a head.
XANTHE ELBRICK and
PATRICK FITZGERALD make this an enjoyable production, even if
the ending seems rather inevitable from the start. The scenic design by
CHARLIE CORCORAN and the lighting design by MICHAEL GOTTLIEB
are perfect to enhance the tale. It’s always a pleasure to see people falling
love.
