In this bounce-off of
Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”, present-day Hollywood megastar JULIO
hogs the spotlight and the glory while those around him are consumed with
jealousy and resentment. He is so busy being pleased with himself that he fails
to notice. Soon an organized betrayal forms as his friends turn into enemies. He
is killed in a very modern way, but is just as dead as if he had been stabbed in
the heart, old-style. Dead is dead. Or so it seems.
Actor Scott Baio is
the “running joke”. No one even remembers who he is, but they go to his parties.
Julio’s wife is Callie Pernia-Julio, his co-star is Bruce, Porsche is Bruce’s
wife, Antony is creator of Julio’s hit TV show. You get the idea. All variations
of Shakespeare’s original characters. The memorial speech becomes an apology. It
wasn’t Julio’s fault that people adored him.
Julio’s ashes are in the
urn, the ceremony is concluded, and the betrayers are nicely pleased with
themselves. In classical plays, this is called “hubris”. And its results are
always bad. The betrayers find themselves betrayed with something even worse
than the man they murdered.
Playwright ANTONY RAYMOND has created an
interesting modern update of what was and will remain a timeless story. There
will always be egomaniacs, and there will always be those who try to wipe that
stupid grin off their faces.
