You are going to want to keep checking your program when you see Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award Winner Wendy Wasserstein’s AN AMERICAN DAUGHTER. The timeline says 1997, but the problems and issues are in line with current events. Lyssa (Jean Lichty) has been nominated for an impressive national position. A minor oversight threatens to undo all of her accomplishments, besmirch her reputation, and unravel the political and personal aspects of her family life. The press, getting ahold of the “scandal,” gives the public what they demand – all the salacious details. And the destruction begins. Sound familiar? The double standard for women, the dirty tricks of politics, the media foregoing the reporting of issues that could affect our lives in favor of juicy irrelevant details – ah yes, hello Hillary’s emails. Was Wasserstein a fortune teller or is this sad confirmation that we haven’t progressed very far? Alas, I fear it is the latter

Nonetheless, AN AMERICAN DAUGHTER should be seen by all. You won’t find a bad performance in this production that includes Tony Award nominee Montego Glover and Tony Award winner Robert Sean Leonard. Under the direction of Sarna Lapine, the cast play off one another superbly while giving each character room to develop. This presentation includes a previously unpublished second act, and both acts are full of sophisticated humor, clever innuendo, and truths that still need to be told. This is what genius looks like!
